Supporting U.S. military families through reading

I have immense respect for the men and women who fight for our country and the families who support them. I’m so proud of my own brother, who served as a medic in Afghanistan. I know what a sacrifice it was for my sister-in-law and her four children to live apart from my brother and worry about his safety.

More than 100,000 military parents are deployed each year, leaving over 4o million children behind. These families miss out on the chance to bond through reading.

United Through Reading is a nonprofit that unites US military families who are apart by helping them read together through video recording. This helps reduce separation anxiety in military children, builds strong military families through positive parenting by creating storytime routines, and encourages literacy development and learning readiness in military children. Last year, military children were able to enjoy more than eight million stories with the help of UTR.

One of my favorite children’s book subscription companies, Bookroo, is teaming up with United Through Reading this 4th of July to support military families.

If you buy a 1 or 3 month @bookroo_love subscription on July 4th, 50% of the profit will go to United Through Reading, a nonprofit that unites US military families who are apart by helping them read together through video recording.

Also, post a photo on Instagram reading with your family, use the hashtag #reading2gether and tag @bookroo_love, and you could win a 1-month Bookroo subscription. Winner announced at Bookroo on July 4th.

I’m so excited to be part of this campaign and hope you will participate too!
