10 Fun (and free) at-home activities for families

what to do at home during coronavirus

Families around the world are staying home for the next few weeks to help slow the spread of COVID-19, and if yours is one of them, hopefully these simple but fun ideas will help make your time indoors together more fun. While nothing can guarantee an always-happy and bicker-free home life, I notice that doing simple activities like these together result in better behavior and less grumpy, “I’m bored” grumbles.

1. Journal together.

Whether it’s in your parent-child Loom Journals or any notebook, writing is an amazing way to to work through feelings and document what we’re all facing right now.

2. Color.

My friend Sarah Jane Studios is offering her cute coloring pages for free right now. I admit, I love using them too! Very relaxing.

3. Cook Together.

Turn it into a picnic or tea party.

4. Have a Sock Battle.

My kids LOVE this. Everyone gets the same amount of socks. Two hits, and you’re out! Teams or individual.

5. Play Pillow Attack.

Parents get the pillows, kids cross from one side of the room or couch to the other without getting slammed. Very therapeutic.

6. Get Moving.

Make a family dance playlist (I’ll share mine in stories) and call out different styles of dancing (ballet, hip hop, crazy, sloth-slow, etc.) We also love Cosmic Kids Yoga. Moving your bodies will decrease stress and help with cabin fever.

7. Have a Read-a-thon.

Gather snacks, books, and make a cozy place to curl up and read.

8. Create a Simple Scavenger Hunt.

Make a list of things for your kids to find around the house or in your backyard and come back for a prize.

9. Make Forts.

My kids spend *hours* creating and playing in forts. Get creative and make them under tables, in closets, etc.

10. Play the Story Game.

Gather items from the house into a bag. Take turns pulling something out and starting a story based on that item. Pass it around until everyone has a chance to make up part of the story, then move on to the next item.
